Denmark's German Refugees stay

As mentioned by Valdemar, at one point after WW2, Denmark had a very large population of German refugees. 5-10% of the total population. So, what if Denmark can't let them return? Be it a larger East Germany and not wanting to send them to, err, a Soviet hellhole, or something else. Would Denmark try to settle them in Schleswig-Holstein? Would they be assimilated?

Given the post-WW2 era, as long as there was even a rump West Germany to send them to they would get their marching orders.

If they had to stay you can be damn sure they wouldn’t be settled en-mass anywhere, especially in a border province.

Yes USSR would likely need more succes but not occupying Denmark, of course in that case Denmark would likely annex South Schleswig to protect the Danish population there*. The Frisian politician also push for joining Denmark in this periode. But Denmark saw it as safer not to include a large German population.

So let imagine that USSR has only left a rump Rhineland West Germany but the Danish-Dutch still end up in western hands.

The refugees would likely be settled in urban areas and be a important part of the post war industrialisation of Denmark. Most of them would likely assimilate as or German urban minority usual did. So they would disappear over the next few generation.

In Schleswig we will likely see a Frisian renaissance, with much of the population of North Frisia readopt their old language. In OTL we saw a split between Frisians whom saw themself as Frisian Germans and one whom saw themself as national Frisians, under Danish rule that split will weaken.

German will likely survive quite well in South Schleswig, while likely losing ground in Flensburg, western Schleswig-Flensburg and Nordfriesland, but stay strong in Angeln, Schleswig and Transeidern Rendsburg-Eckernförde.

In a short periode Denmark are going to be 10-15% German, but as the refugee population assimilate we will likely only have a population of 5-6% Germans by 2010 but that one will be stable. Frisians will only be one 1% the entire time.

*Around half of South Schleswig voters voted for SSW (the Danish-Frisian party) after WWII
