Denmark as part of Prussia

Been considering ... its known that Christian IX of Denmark tried, as part of the discussions about the second Scheswig/holstein war tried to convince William I of Prussia to let Denmark be a part of the German Confederation, but was denied, partly because of the fact that Denmark didn't speak German, and that they were concerned about how France and UK would feel about Germany getting the naval capabilities and oversea dependencies (Faroe, Iceland, Greenland and Danish West Indies (US virgin islands) ...

But what would have happened if it was accpeted due to some uncertain butterfly?

I wonder if that had any backing by the population or even the Danish elites. It seems to me that this is some plan of a monarch to rescue his personal belongings.

true ... it would likely cause some civil unrest, but then again ... what if that happened ... Christian IX came onto the throne after a succession crisis where the previous king (something like second cousin once removed or something like that) didn't have any heirs, and his wife was actually (if not for Salic law) closer to succession than himself ... If he was thrown off the throne we could have a even bigger succession crisis, which could easier have been used for an optimistic attack from someone with a claim on the throne

Well, I'm fairly certain that the UK, at the very least, would be very concerned. Not so much because of naval capabilities - from what I know, the Danish navy back in 1864 wasn't exactly extraordinary - but the oversea territories would cause some disagreement. Beyond that, the mere fact that the Prussians would be seen as annexing a non-German nation would certainly cause some uproar in France, and might hasten the start of the Franco-Prussian war.

In Denmark, eh. There'd certainly be protests and riots, but nothing that wouldn't be easily struck down. What I'm really interested in is how the other Scandinavian countries would react.

i could see the colonies (or some people) mabye wanting autonomy and some other power (britain, france or someone) take over and make them "protectorates"

Well,

Denmark joining the German Confederation as non-german member will give good precedent for other countries, and finally may resolve the Austrian issues with Grossdeutschland, i.e. full unification including the non-german territories.

The post-1871 constitutional structure of OTL German Empire / GE admitted the imperial constituents to have their own separate monarchs.

1860es - Denmark ( + colonies )

1870es - reogranisation of Austria-Hungary via its absorbtion in the German Empire. The non-german Kingdoms of A-H become also direct members of the GE yet still the Habsburgs hold the crowns of these member-kingdoms: Hungary, Croatia, Chech, Slovakia ...

1890es - 1910es such GE may swalow also the Balkans ( Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria ), Poland, Baltic states, ...
