Democratic Republic of Taiwan?

What if, early on, European powers or others supported this republic against Japanese aggression? Who would want to do that?

Unless someone could come up with a pretty big motivator, I don't see it happening. It was one of those ill-fated tin pot revolutions that would have imploded under its own weight eventually. The Japanese merely sped it up. Second, no one had any reason to help. The Japanese legally occupied territory that was theirs in the first place and all of the Western powers had good or servicable relations with Japan.
