Democratic President in 1864

On often trod What-If, basically the Rebs are doing good in '64, say a successful Gettysburg or something far worse. Tired of war, the coalition Union Party under Lincoln fractures with the Democrats reuniting somewhat calling for a negotiated peace.

My real question who could be a credible Democrat candidate in 1864? Do the Peace Democrats have a decent man or maybe a War Democrat who changes sides after military reversals.

Pretty vague but curious, throw knowledge and suggestion at my face.

Historian Albert Castel (whose history of the Atlanta Campaign is the best ever written or ever likely to be written) has explored this question at length, and he makes two key points.

1. A Democratic winner in 1864 would have been elected only through conditions that would have made it very difficult for him to resist the pressure from Peace Democrats to call a cease-fire in an attempt to negotiate with the South. Such negotiations would have been futile, but having stopped hostilities, it would have been extremely difficult if not impossible to resume them.

2. Since a Democratic victory in 1864 would have been likely to cause Union policy to shift away from an anti-slavery position (i.e. Let's try to bring the South back in by guaranteeing that slavery won't be interfered with), Republicans would have largely abandoned the war, since they would have seen a restoration of the Union with slavery as a less desirable outcome than a breakup of the Union itself.
