Dukakis doesnt screw up his campaign, or somebody a little more effective (Biden, hart, Gephardt) runs instead. Or lee atwater chokes on a pretzel, or dukakis gets a better campaign manager.
Seriously, he was leading by 17 points at one point during the campaign. It takes a very special campaign to see that sort of lead get reversed in a matter of months.
Perhaps if you have Dukakis respond angrily and vigorously to both Willie Horton and the ridiculous debate question about his wife, it becomes turnabout and backfires on the Republicans. I don't know if it could lead to a rout that big, but it certainly could lead to a Dukakis victory.
Go to the Atlas political election forum. They have a good electoral college calculator with maps going back to I think 1900. You can invent the results of your own alternate election for whatever year.
