Demise of the US

So this TL is kinda based on the film "death of a president" but i kinda gave it my own twist. I'm still kinda new to the whole concept of making an alternate timeline so all help is welcome...

Part I: Prelude

November 5 2006: Former President of Iraq Saddam Hussein is sentenced to death by hanging by the Iraqi Special Tribunal

November 7 2006: In the US senate elections, The democrats have took some ground but the republicans are still in the saddle. Thanks to the election of Simon Adler*as Senator for the state of Washington. He takes the place of the much loved Patty Murray, who retires from politics. The party balance is now 50-50 but Vice president Cheney breaks the tie in favor for the republicans.

Simon Adler

November 8 2006: The media covers Adler intensely, he is considered a valuable asset for the republicans. He is only 34, but served in the first Gulf war at age 19, was decorated for bravery and after his service he graduated at Yale university.

November 10 2006: Adler is seen at a high profile meeting with big names in business and government. notable guest seen are, Rupert Murdoch,Warren Buffett and Vice President Cheney.

December 21 2006: Adler finds himself in the eye of a storm as the media uncovers his "skinhead" past trough an ex-schoolmate. Adler refuses to comment.

December 25 2006 : Adler and his entourage give a brief press conference about his troublesome past. He said he had a tough childhood and wanted to belong somewhere. He makes clear that he was just a kid and apologizes to anyone who feels hurt. Claiming that the military and god got his life back on the rails. So Adler is not stepping down for office.

Part II: The Fatefull Trip

18 October 2007: President Bush arrives in Chicago to adress an economic forum at the Sheraton Hotel. On the way his car was attacked by anti war protesters.

19 October 2007: After he attended the forum, the president goes out to greet the people, while he was shaking hands he was attacked by a man, in the daze he is shot 3 times. They rushed him to the hospital. The nation is in shock.

The now infamous Bush Assassination.

20 October 2007: As news of the assassination reached the people, FBI detectives conclude that the shots where fired from a nearby building. The first case scenario is the lone wolf theory. The man attacking the president earlier on was mentally ill and well know with the secret service. However an act of terrorism isn't ruled out.

20 October 2007: President Bush dies due to his sustained injuries. A gunshot in his heart proved him fatal. He was 61 years old. Vice President Cheney sworn in as President.

21 October 2007: A first suspect is arrested, an ex-Syrian soldier named Samir Masri was put at the crime scene by several people. Tensions with Syria rise as Senator Adler demands to hear an explanation for the attack.

Mugshot of Samir Masri

22 October 2007: The United states send a cruiser towards the eastern Mediterranean. The US ambassador to Syria is called home.

23 October 2007: Congress passes Cheney's Patriot Act III, Giving somewhat unlimited power to the FBI and other federal agencies.

President Cheney explaining the the Patriot Act III to the People

23 October 2007: There is evidence that places Masri at an Al Qaeda camp in Afghanistan. More suspicion is raised. Could this be an act of terrorism after all?

* Simon Adler is a fictional character, Purely imagined for this TL

I am going to enjoy the evil Neo con timeline.

By enjoy I mean consider this to be one of the worst things ever written on this board.

Problem: The NeoCons were a dead force on the national stage by this time. While Bush being assassinated would make one think they could have a rebirth, in fact, Cheney being Cheney, he could be counted on to use up any political capital he had from Bush's death within a few weeks. We are talking about a man who excoriated Gore for criticizing Bush only 18 months after Bush was sworn in, yet had no compunctions about rushing to the Sunday talk shows to excoriate Obama in much worse terms on the second sunday after Obama's swearing in!

This will wind up in CHAT.

Yeah, this would have been much more effective if the major POD was in 2003, either shortly before or shortly after the Iraq invasion. Bush was much more popular and the country much more starkly polarized, especially in the two months' run-up to the invasion. His whole agenda died on the vine over the course of 2005, thanks to the failure of Social Security privatization, the ongoing war in Iraq that was supposed to be over, and the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina.

Not to mention that the Bush Administration spent six long years in re-election mode, whether for the White House or the off-year congressional elections.(1) It could honestly be said that there really was no Bush Administration, but rather the Never-Ending Bush Campaign. Which is what happens when you put your political campaign manager, advisor, and guru in as your White House Chief-of-Staff. Essentially, ALL decisions were being made solely based on their political aspects, not on the little matter of it being a question of good government.

Political advisors are supposed to be relatively rarely seen people in the administration, except in the run ups to election day. Which is why in the hit series "West Wing", after the first season, they had to get rid of the political advisor played by Moira Kelly. She didn't have anything to do (one year after the election) and the two or so episodes where they gave her something they turned into embarrassments.

The key for a successful presidency is to DO great things for all Americans, not do your damnedest to just please your political base at all times.

1) Which is why Bush and co. was so shocked by the 2006 elections, AND why they then spent the next two years spinning their wheels.

Only in an ASB TL can one invent a character out of thin air, who's "born" before the POD (which in your story is November 2006), and have him come literally out of no where to defeat a sitting U.S. Senator in an election.

You CAN however refer to unnamed persons for the purposes of storytelling. But electing a fresh NeoCon POTUS following no WMDs in Iraq is ASB in and of itself.
