It can't be, not in any POD terms, because it is a mathamatical sociological trend that results from improved standards of living and difference between birth and death rates. Families quickly realise that when the death rate falls, that they don't need as many children, typically this is about 3-4 generations of time.

Therefore the only varibles in the equation is how big a population exsited before the exponetial growth during the 'expanding stages'.

Since this controls the late stationary phase total population.

The stage 5 decline trend is currently unknown as to how strong it might be. Interestingly overrall lifespan will come to effect this strongly as living longer actually means larger populations overral. Hence population decline may be offset by technological advances in medicine again which could lead to another future explosion.

Indeed if we were ever to develop a method of 'imortality' (or at least living a couple centuries) we would certainly have another expanding phase...but this one could last for centuries and end up with humanity having populations in the region of ~30bn by 2500AD even only assuming mean life expectancy in the West gets to 100 years old!!!!!

Look up the demographic transition model and world population models wikipedia is a good place to start ;).
