Delaying Manifest Destiny, alternate political systems, and Deseret?

Hmm, a quick question - what would the status be of the Spanish language in Deseret? You're probably going to have quite a few Spanish speakers within Deseret's borders.

3. I like Switzerland, but I don't really want Deseret to be an American Swizterland. Staying too small and without a border with the ocean makes Deseret a lot more desirable as an easy target of annexation. And a port would improve Deseret's finances considerably. Plus living here in Utah without much water (besides the Great Salt Lake and various mountain "rivers") is driving me stir-crazy. I'd like the poor Deseretians to avoid that fate. :p

Well, I think the idea is to basically copy the Swiss form of government. Which is pretty neat, in fact - a cross between parliamentary democracy and the American system but with a collective leadership that also happens to be the Cabinet at the same time.

Not really. The Southwest outside of central New Mexico and pockets of the California coastline was absent of colonial settlement; indigenous languages are likelier to be heard, but the diversity of them, and the relatively small indigenous populations will allow for English domination. Furthermore, to the extent that there was colonial settlement, it was particularly sparse in Alta California, meaning if Nuevo Mexico is kept out of Mormon hands, English dominance will be easier still to achieve.

Agreed.
