DeGaulle assassinated

But mightFrance retain all or at least part of Algeria--and those parts of its African territories with high mineral wealth and low population if DeGaulle was successfully assassinated?

No! Algeria was already a Independent state since July 5 1962. The assasination attempt was on August 22.

France probably stays in NATO since DeGualle is not around to have a hissy fit
The High Command/General Staff/Important People told those in charge of NATO that incase of a war they would dovetail their military back into NATO. Which may be part of the reason why the Soviets aimed missiles at them and had plans to wreck them even after they publically left the "military" aspects of NATO. Not that that had made much of a difference.

Was going to make another thread for this, but search turned this one up.

Just had another thought, is it possible that this butterflies Lee Harvey Oswald's assassination of Kennedy? I imagine that in the aftermath of the de Gaulle assassination that western leader-protection-forces might get iffy about further attempts and insist on better security measures, so just maybe, there's enough measures in place that Oswald either misses the shot, or that he doesn't attempt it at all.

Probably not. The attempted assassination of De Gaulle on 22 August 1962 was carried out by a team who fired their machine guns from almost point blank range at De Gaulle's Citroen as it drove past them. In this it was almost the cliché assassination attempt that the secret service, along with every international security service had prepared for: an gunman firing a gun or throwing a bomb from close range. The most famous assassination up until then - that of Franz Ferdinand - had been exactly that, as was almost every other assassination. Kennedy was the first political assassination in which the target was shot by a rifle from long range, and in fact I think he may still be the only assassination using that method.

I think so. The Secret Service would have insisted on a plastic bubble top on the car at Dallas on November 22, 1963.

Large Butterflies of course, but as others have said the far-right doesn't have the support to hold on to power. Their peak of power, Operation Corse had come and gone and many of their supporters had just wanted de Gaulle in power.

This was very, very close to succeeding. Have that bullet hit de Gaulle in the head and you've got your assassination. Not sure what would happen though, I don't know much about French politics of the time, but I imagine there would be a crackdown on support for groups that were angry about Algeria.

IIRC, that is the assassination attempt where de Gaulle and his wife were on the way to the airport and traveling faster than usual because de Gaulle's wife had bought some chicken she hoped to cook when they reached their designation.

The speed of the car caught the terrorist leader by surprise and he was a second late getting his signal out to his shooters.

The windows of de Gaulle's car were shattered and one of his motorcycle escorts were killed. Reportedly neither de Gaulle (nor his wife) bothered to even duck. de Gaulle simply brushed the broken glass off his lap and kept talking to her (he reportedly suffered a small cut on a finger while doing so.

Once at their destination, de Gaulle's wife reportedly opened the trunk anxiously and exclaimed "Oh I hope they didn't hit the chicken!"

Okay, that is truly hilarious.

A precision in French les "poulets" are a nickname for the police. And the iteration is more hilarious for the dole entendre
