Defense of Jerusalem, 1191.

WI: Saladin died suddenly after the surrender of Acre in 1191. His remaining armies rapidly lose the will to resist the crusaders. Jerusalem is de-fortified and easily occupied by Richard I of England. When Richard departs, Henry of Champagne is King of Jerusalem. The question is defense. Most of the troops killed at Hattin in 1187 were native born. The reconstituted kingdom is there fore very short of manpower. Then there is the question of the Jordanian castles such as Kerak, which were vital to the defense of Jerusalem. Do the military orders take over the primary role of the defense of the new kingdom? How does this change the operation of the government and the distribution of land ?

Richard I successfully returning home on the back of successfully taking Jerusalem would have a lot going for him - no ransome to bankrupt the kingdom, a positive crusading spirit, a renewed effort perhaps to the Holy Land. Cue English dominance in the near future?

No. The ransom wasn't the only thing that bankrupted England. The main factor was Richard's overseas (mis)adventures. John had to levy taxes to attempt to fund his wreckless brother's fiascos.

By overseas you mean in France?

I mean all of his little escapades throughout Europe and the Middle East, and yes to a degree dealing with his French possessions.

But I'm not really an expert on the medieval west. I'm more of an Eastern man myself:D

Well it depends more on the Muslims then the Crusaders. When Saladin died the Muslims pretty much immediately split up with Mosul, Cairo, and Damascuss doing whatever they wanted pretty much , this means that the Crusaders may be able to fortify and bring in more troops from Europe.
