What would it take to have a anti-royalist movement in the 1770s and 1780s to remove all reference to British royalty from American placenames?
From north to south, that would affect
New York (named for the Duke of York, later James II)
Maryland (named for Queen Henrietta Maria)
Virginia (named for the Virgin Queen Elizabeth I)
North Carolina (named for King Charles II)
South Carolina (ditto)
Georgia (named for King George II)
Plus, a lot of towns and rivers.
Any ideas what the replacements might have been? Allegorical (Liberty etc.) or traditional (native names, like Powhatan for Virginia or Yamasee for Georgia)?
