To a certain extent De Gaule who had been a minor enough character in pre WW2 France had to go against his natural instinct, when he left for Britain during the war as he went contrary to his oath of loyalty to the army. What would have happened had he stayed loyal to Petain and supported Vichy or if he had disappeared off to Canada in the wake of initial French defeats, as he almost did. My view is that some other Free French figurehead would have come to the top, probably a situation that ultimately both Churchill and Ike would have preferred, but without De Gaule how would modern France have changed and if on the other side how would WW2 have played out for this nation?
