DDBI: What would happen if North America were many countries

As you all know, the United States of America was founded in 1776 and for 140 years was transformed into the dream of its founders.

Between 1776 and 1920, the country expanded from just 13 colonies to fully govern the northern hemisphere of the American continent. From the North Pole to Panama and Guyana, From Alaska to Greenland.

The country has three co-official languages (Spanish, English and French) and several state languages. It has 100 states and more than 5,000 counties. It has a population of over 500 million and is the country with the largest surface area, surpassing Russia.

The country has six time zones, 7 open television channels that are trilingual five major sports leagues (MLS, NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA) and the football team was third in the World Cup three times! Education is as egalitarian as possible,

The capital is Washington DC, the two most populated cities are New York and Mexico City.

Of course not everything has been perfect, for example there is latent racism and discrimination but it has been combated and partially reduced.

What would the world be like if there were more than 2 of them in one place in one country? How would the course of the Great War have changed?

Political Catholicism may not have been such a major player in North America had the Union not existed in its present form. There's a reason why no President since 1894 has been a Protestant, just with the sheer overwhelming number of Catholics in the Union at that point in its history.

Maybe a North America with more division would actually allow for abortion and homosexual rights; however, the death penalty may not have been abolished continent-wide, so that would be one downside. You'd also probably lose out on the Distributist policies that have helped so many get out of the cycle of poverty.

I know a lot of progress has been made, but the American population is still very conservative and pro-Catholic; a divided North America may see the Protestants be able to get their feet under them and create an alternate vision. I'm not exactly sure what it would look like, though- hopefully not a continent-wide Bostonian Commune.
