DC in the Confederacy

Ok, I know its a long shot, but say that the CSA not only survives, but DC is included in their area (IE, a scenario where Maryland also went CSA). What would they do with it once peace was made? And what would the Union responce be?

It'd probably be a symbollic capitol, but the day-to-day affairs of the government will be ran out of Richmond.

North would probably locate to Philly, perhaps New York and a Confederate occupation of Maryland would almost certainly ensure there's another war ten, twenty years down the road.

Guess a POD could be Lincoln's just too nice a guy to use the Army to put down Maryland at the beginning of the war. Even then, seems a longshot.

In 1864, after the War the CS Capital Committee finally decides on the location of the new Federal District.
Just SW of Chattanooga,on the Georgia/Tennessee/Alabama Border.
In 1865 The CS congress accepts the land, in the same bill accepting the land and authoring construction, is an article Ceding the US Federal District back to Marysland and Virginia.
Construction on the Confederate Presidential Palace [Official name of the White House] begins in late 1865, and newly Inaugurated President Breckenridge moves in in 1868.

Meanwhile in West Virgina just west of Pittsburgh [that little piece that sticks up between Pennsylvania &Ohio] construction is under way on the New US Federal District.
And whe finally get US Capital Drivers who can drive in the Snow.:p

Well, my major concern is that if DC isn't being the capital, how will it sustain itself. It doesn't really have any economy besides being the capital does it?

Well in the 1800's, you would have the Port Towns of Georgetown and Brandenburg, and in the 1800's 50~60% of the area was Farmland -this would continue.
in the 20th century you would have a growing tourist business.

But for the most part it would remain a sleepy Little Rural Area. [remembre in 1940, pre WW2, DC only had just over half a million people].
ITTL you would be lucky to have that many in Columbia [ex DC] Montgomery, & Prince Georges [two neighboring] Counties Combined.

If DC becomes part of the Confederacy, it ceases to exist and its territory is returned to Virginia and Maryland. The area is unlikely to become totally irrelevant, but it wouldn't grow to nearly half the size it has today.
