In 1992 and 1993, DC Comics had two of their most famous (IMHO) storylines to date: Knightfall and the Death of Superman. Both of them have been adapted into movies in some form or another, the most recent being The Dark Knight Rises adapting elements of Knightfall. For those who are uninitiated, the former involves the villain known as Bane manipulating Batman's weakness in a time of rampant crime and ultimately breaking his back - this leads to a man known as Jean Paul Valley taking over the cowl and basically going bat shit insane, pun intended. The latter involves the super being known simply as "Doomsday" coming to Earth and laying the smackdown of all smackdowns on the Boy in Blue, ultimately "killing" him. Of course, he eventually came back, but they did keep him out of the picture for at least a few months while four other Supermen basically fought for the right to be Superman.

But What If...?

The two storylines had been slightly swapped, and instead of having his back broken Bruce Wayne is full on killed by Bane and Superman has his back broken at the hands of Doomsday. What with ratings, this probably won't stick, but for the sake of argument lets say they can push this envelope until about mid 1994.

There are two sides of this question: What would transpire within the comic book universe as a result of this - in other words, where might they take this storyline? The other side is (of course) the real world portion of the tale - would this be nearly as popular as it was OTL?
