Can you really lump the New England region together with regards to colonies? I mean, compare the Massachusetts protectorate over the Kingdom of Hawai'i with say, the short-lived yet horrifying Rhode Island Congo...
Don't be a Rhode Island hater, Rhode Island's problems in the Congo sure can be seen as having "their eyes too big for their belly" - I abhor imperialism so I just feel so wrong for saying that - but Rhode Island's problems were more in line with corruption in local officials, and the slavery, you can't forget about the rubber slaves, slavery in itself is horrifying.
Still, you have to appreciate their treaty ports and islands, Chandannagar was given a 99 year lease until 2049, and Rhode Island has Tsingtao until 2013. I know that some consevatives want them to keep Tsingtao, I dunno how that'll turn out though.
You can't just say that the New English states never cooperated, but without New English unifies pressuer, all of those little settlements in China wouldn't have survived. The international settlements like the Peking Legation Quarter, Gulangyu Island, the Shanghai International Settlement, and Tianjin. Of coure you can blame it on the Cold War mentality, NATO against the Communists in these little concesions that were supposed to be open for all people to visit and see - all inside the neutral socialist People's Republic of China. Just look at how mant Bond films or Tom Clancy novels were set in the Chinese settlements.
Of course, the New English
, mostly united,
did allow Jews to be safe in their concessions awith the whole Holocause and the pogroms, setting a precedent tor other nations to do so. I mean now you got with almost every war, genocide, or refugee crisis, like Darfur or the tsunami or something, all of these people find a safe haven in the international settlements, so there was some good with the imperialism after all.
