DBWI: Would We Have Powell???

Well the 2008 presidential election is only a few days away, and the big question that many political strategists and pundits are considering, is whether the perceived failures in foreign policy and the economy of the last 8 years of the Gore Administration, responsible for the success of the Republican presidential campaign of former General Colin Powell (R-NY), or is it merely the poor campaign skills of Senator Howard Dean (D-VT) and his vice-presidential pick, Governor Christine Gregoire (D-WA)?

Well, Colin Powell's always been a popular centrist, with support on both sides of the aisle - he could've been President 12 years ago if he wanted. Dean's chances would never have been particularly good against Powell anyway.

But I do have to say - I think that Dean was probably the Democrats' best bet for this election. Hillary tends to drive away undecideds, and the less said about Vice President Lieberman the better (thank God he got stomped in the primaries...)

Then again, one has to question whether the Gore administration's handling of the Second Korean War, along with Saddam Hussein's recent claims (OOC: false claims) of having nuclear weapons has exasperated many Americans to consider Powell as a viable alternative to a continuation of the Clinton/Gore policies. What do you think?

Powell is I think a symbol that the Republicans have finally got with the program. Powell's policies to me seem more like Clinton than Reagan, which is intriguing coming from a Republican, especially after the GOP spent most of Clinton's time and Gore's first term driving the president insane. I think after McCain got stomped in 2004 that they finally realized what's wrong.

Powell chose a good running mate in Christine Todd Whitman (R-NJ), too. A black four-star general and a white woman former governor of New Jersey who one of the GOP's best voices in the Senate.

Howard Dean is such a tool its amazing. We go from Slick Willie and Gore to this clown? Gregoire shoulda been the one on top of the ticket.

Well, another reason that McCain lost the 2004 election was the fact that the insurgency in Pyongyang hadn't launched their offensive yet, and the fact that McCain offered nothing new in terms of the economy.

Whitman also serves to blunt the argument by the Gore administration and the Dean campaign that Powell's campaign would be weak on the environment. The fact that they repudiated the links to the Christian Coalition has provided for the "GOP bigger tent" at a time when they needed to change their image.

As for Dean, it is frightening how calm and reserved Powell looks on the bully pulpit compared to the screaming rants that Dean seems to inspire. Will Farrell's imitation of the "Dean Scream" on Saturday Night Live (NBC-TV) is extremely uncanny....
