DBWI: Would use of nuclear weapons butterfly away the conspiracy theorists?

The conspiracy theorists claim the evidence is "suppressed" & those spreading the truth are assassinated. Yet they are are busy spreading their claims of irrefutable proof unmolested. Anyone here met someone who actually wore a foil lined hat? I had that experience once. The individual actually sounded very rational for some time. It took several hours for him to break down into craziness.

To touch briefly on the conspiracy theories, the USA did not have nuclear bombs in World War 2. Its true they developed them, but the first tests were postwar. They may well have been used if the war had lasted through 1945.

When testing got started in earnest, it was clear from the Albuquerque incident that the explosives were in fact too destructive to be used except in dire situations. The pictures from that are clear enough. I actually think that it was the US government's efforts to cover up what happened in Albuquerque that gave rise to the conspiracy theories. An alternative POD is that there is no accident or no cover up and more trust in the government. I don't think you should set off nuclear weapons just to get rid of conspiracy theories!

The term "conspiracy theory" itself was a meme spread by the US government to discredit people raising what turns out to have been valid questions about what exactly happened in Albuquerque, as well as people who questioned the circumstances of FDR's death.

Apparently similar things happened with the Soviet testing program, and it led to the 1954 agreement to ban above ground tests, which actually increases the conspiracy theorizing because the tests have been underground and not visible to the public.
