Gosh EricM, if someone had said to me in 1980 that the EU would move away from the US without the breakup of the Soviet Union and the reunification of Germany, I'd have said they were talking absolute shit.

I couldn't disagree. Quite an extraordinary last 25 years we have had.

I tell you right now if the USSR fell fiction would suck. seriously, how many books, movies, and games have Russians as bad guys or even the new kids on the block the French I mean EU and the Chineese. I mean games like Call of Duty Black Ops would have had even worse writing if we weren't behind Soviet lines making it look like a Chinese op. really who would be the bad guys in fiction with out the Soviets. Israel? Brazil? Canadian?
But what scares me right now is the Argentine-Chile Cold war. I doubt they would have the guts to do that if the Pacific Alliance was able to focus more on south America. What's tough about it they are booth anti-Soviet, PRC but they clearly are not fans of their North American neighbors. Add their fascist i mean "republican dictatorship" if one of them wins and absobs the other one it could be WWII again with them wanting places like Paraguay and Peru, and I have no idea who will side with who. Russians siding with the US to stop them? or the Russians and EU backing the aggressors to gain an new ally in the western hemisphere? scary stuff that threatens nuclear war either way

Well I think The Soviet's in particular aren't that much different from us in that they would rather share dominance than be forced to be number two.
The NATO dissolution was quite possibly the best thing to ever happen to The United States. The Soviets can't be that bothered with us when they have the EU and PRoC at their front door causing shenanigans. Finally someone clued in that some Germans are not worth nuking the planet over.

The only time we ever come into loggerheads with The Soviets is when either of us puts a new missile platform up in orbit. Even then they bitch about it publicly but tolerate it behind closed doors. I couldn't imagine they being so lenient if The European Union or China were launching weapons satellites. Beijing and Geneva would be smoldering craters.

BTW speaking of space, as sad as it is to see The Endeauvor be retired, I am very excited to see the Shuttle II fleet take launch next year. I just have this feeling that without The Soviets, the space race would never have been kicked off again. That orbital shipyard they have in the planning phases will be amazing once its completed. If we're not on Mars within 15 years I am going to be sorely disappointed. It's too bad the recession put off the original date of 2019 for the Moon Landing's Fiftieth Anniversary.
