DBWI: Winston Churchill lived

Well, Winston Churchill died in 1931 in NYC (I'm currently at the place where he was hit). Many say he would have had a reat impact had he lived. OTOH, there was gallipoli to think about.

What would you think?

Who is Winston Churchill?

Some politician, bit of a dodgy guy to say the least he was partly responsible for Gallipoli and was a real imperialist as well as defecting wice from the Tories and Liberals.

He could have been first lord of the admiralty again but his adventurousness would probably get him the sack.

If he became PM let's just say that he'd make Halifax's wartime mistakes look tiny he might have tried to save Greece instead of kncoking out Libya or even invaded Italy.

Such a shame. Over here in the US, bestselling author S M Stirling has written "the Gathering Storm" a series of novels where Churchill lives.

Good reads, but i wonder whether it is so accurate to have Communism last so long after a devastating war. Heck, All this and there is still a president Reagan?

Yeah like most of Stirlings work it's pretty improbable that even Churchill would invade Eastern Europe after WW2.

I mean who knows what would have happened if the Britis stayed in the War, Stalin might not have prepared for Barbarossa I mean its unlikely he'd be so stupid but reports from whilst Britain was still in the war seemed to indicate that he was ignored German build up's.

I rember reading on how he messed up Gallipoli ... I wouldn't trust the man to run a bath let alone a country

Ah, Churchill. Another politician with potential done in by circumstances and himself.

unless I am very much mistaken, churchill was in the political wilderness when he had his little accident, and I'm not really sure how he could have extracated himself. Maybe he gets appointed to fill a minor cabinet post or run some department in the lat 30's or 40's. Maybe he could have recreated himself somehow. But it doesn't seem very likely. In all probability, he flits around on the outskirts of government for a decade or two, throws out a hare-brained scheme or two, and dies in obscurity.

S M Stirling actually used those reports as inspiration and to make it plausible. Heck, he used Declassified CIA archives. smuggled Nazi and Soviet documents as well as Chinese Intel reports to make his work plausible.

But for Stalin, it was too little, too late. With Germany directing its full resources towards crushing the communists rather than fighting a two front war, there was not much that could be done.

Yeah, the fact Germans managed to reach the outskirts of Kiev by Winter proved this.

Still at least he hadnt completely ignored it the Germans might have even taken Moscow if this was the case.

People give him too much flack for Gallopi, it was the failure of local commanders mostly.

On Churchill living, he was already long gone form his prime, he would probably just die of some natural cause in the 50's...He was a long way gone from his (semi) prime....

Unfortunately, they did by February 1942.

Had Churchill lived, Hitler would have been stretched too thin forcing him to retreat. Who kows, the Soviets wouldn't have suffered a crushing defeat.

Yeah but at least Stalin had some preparedness.

Too true. That is something we should NEVER forget.

Stalin failed to destroy the beast, but he died trying.

Meanwhile America, China, Korea, India and Japan are among the nations that have gone far and ahead of the Reich.

So wht is everyone's opinions on "the gathering storm"? It has appeared on Oprah and Limbaugh with them both plugging it.
