DBWI-Wilson Victorious in 1964?

Hi all,
The UK General Election of 1964 was extremely close and resulted in the conservatives barely winning a parliamentary majority. Labour were the favourites to win however, so it's not much of a stretch to imagine Harold Wilson taking labour to victory.

My question is, what would be the result of this? The 1964 parliament saw some pretty radical legislation being passed, especially considering a tory-lead government was in power. Would labour be able to pass more? Who ends up leading the conservatives?

Discuss.

I don't know that much about domestic politics of the period, but Wilson was opposed to Britain going into Vietnam. That's a giant butterfly right there, especially for the counterculture movement.

Home would probably still step down in '65 or so after the heart attack. I don't think Butler would replace him though, which butterflies away Powell's ascendancy most likely. How about Maudling?

I agree with you that Butler doesn't become Tory leader in a TL where they are in opposition. I think Maudling would be the likely successor, but bare in mind that Hone proposed the introduction of a leadership contest within the conservative party, simelar to the rules introduced in 1970 IOTL. Therefore, the leader could well be elected by the Tories as a whole rather than the 'Magic Circle'. Maybe Heath could have an outside chance of becoming opposition leader here?
