DBWI: William III killed in a shipwreck

William II was in a shipwreck in 1120, before he became king. If he'd been killed, Henry I wouldn't have had a male heir, and the throne would have gone to his daughter Matilda. What would have happened then?

Empress Matilda would probably have been able to secure the throne with the backing of her husband, and given that her son Henry VI would the Kingdom, England might be brought closer into Imperial affairs- perhaps to the extent that the Aquitanian match for Henry VI that was floated goes through and France is de facto a part of the Empire also.

The Aquitanian match would be a major change. With a much larger English realm in France you might see the Crown retain lands in France after 1143 and keep up the channel hopping lifestyle of the William III and Henry I. Possibly the English Kings remain more "French" and French isn't replaced as the court dialect by the end of the century?

OOC: There is no way you can have a English Henry VI this early, assume it's a typo meaning Henry II.

Do you mean William II, or William Adelin, or Stephen?

Henry I had no lack of male heirs - from William Clito to the various Champagne-Blois brothers.

OOC: HRE Henry VI, Henry V lives longer, has a son by Empress Matilda and that son later becomes Emperor after a few inbetween the father and him.
