Well, with a stream of new laws making it more difficult for smokers like me to smoke in public, the seemingly daily rants against "Big Cannabis" and the Netherlands recent ban, does the board think that cannabis/hemp will be banned in most western countries sooner or later, or is it a question of when instead of if?

Note : shouldn't this in After 1900 ?

Impossible man, my grandpa used cannabis regularly with his friend, a lot of older people use it for "medication", and they vote regularly. any politician suggesting this will be slaughtered on primary.

The soutern states would be solidly against any move towards a federal ban. Hemp is the biggest cash crop down there, and Big Cannabis lavishly funds local politicians' campaigns on both sides of the aisle. Hemp has been an all-American crop since the Founding Fathers' time, and as the late Jesse Helms used to say, you can't be pro-America if you aren't pro-cannabis.

Yes. Remember that this is a place where even today, people still read the classics like On the Doper Trail by "Ham" Lincoln (best line: "If you can remember the 1830s, you weren't really there!"). Or Grow Your Own by the anti-establishment but excellent agriculturalist Edmund "Reefin" Ruffin. This is a place where the most popular seasonal gift is the Christmas hemper.

Besides, imagine country & western music without cannabis. The whole genre is based on pot smoking. The typical country song, the quip goes, can be summed up as "I lost the farm, my girl left me, I got nothing but Johnny Spliff to keep me company."

Was it vice-president Garner who earned the nickname Cannabis Jack because he wanted it to be the Texas state flower?

Indeed. Or President Long who, despite accomplishing so much else in public works and education, never did shake his nickname as "King Spliff".

On a more serious note, talk of "Big Cannabis" is not just a tabloid sensation. The Big Six have deep pockets and political influence which goes to the highest levels in multiple governments.

True, they may be past their peak in the middle of last century, when the United Fibre Company could make or break politicians from Kentucky to Peru.
But no-one should write off their lobbyists. Note that no matter how much Hugo Chávez has changed Venezuela in other areas, even his land reforms haven't touched the Big Six.

Cannabis has been legal here in Manitoba since 1991, a road which started after Canada severing ties with Britain in November, 1945. :D
