What if Spain had one unified football team instead of the autonomous provinces playing separately? How would they have done at the World Cup and European Championships?

OOC: This is really unlikely for two reasons. If you change the reasons, you have a very different universe.

The teams for the separate realms in the UK is a rather dubious privilege or tradition granted to the English because the sport was invented there. So for a start, in this universe, soccer/ association football has been invented in Spain.

Second, the realms within the United Kingdom kept their separate identities much better than they did in the unified Kingdom of Spain formed by the Bourbons about the same time. So when international tournaments start, Spain is much more centralized. In particularly, Franco would NOT have allowed the Catalonians their own team, let alone the Basques. So you have to change much more Spanish history than the OP probably thought.

Also, how many players in the Spanish team that won the World Cup not come from Castille? This might not affect the World Cup much at all.

OOC: OK fair enough, but instead of just shitting on the premise would you care to venture more of a guess as to the outcome?

OOC again: My point was that the alternative universe that has just been created is one where "football" is not the invention of a group of English public schools, but was invented in Spain, and somehow this also means Franco was never in power. This just may be more than the OP has bargained for. I'm not even sure what the "football" game here is, its probably not soccer!

OOC: Its sort of like an alternative universe where Major League baseball consists of 29 teams based in Canada, and one team in the United States. To get something like that, the sport probably no longer resembles baseball.

OOC: As someone pointed out to me recently in another thread, the UK is not the only nation which has only one football team. Puerto Rico is part of the USA and has it's own team for example. And as I'm sure you know football was not invented in either Puerto Rico or the USA. Also there were already regional football teams in existence in Spain before the first World Cup:

Well if Spain had one team, maybe they could keep some dignity and not get permanently beaten by bloody Portugal. I mean at the last Euro, you got housted by Iceland.

ICELAND.

Ridiculous.

OOC: Is Portugal now part of Spain in this one? That could be interesting.
In the Roman Championship, the tribes of Iberia just cannot get a break against the small underdogs of Hyperborea. I don' care, I support the Gallic Team and they got in the final after beating the Marcomanni :D

Maybe if the Carlists had been marginalised after the Civil War. They were pretty big on promoting regional identities and culture. I imagine a Falangist Spain would seek to avoid that.
