(OOC: I was inspired by this after reading the 1997 NFL standings, specifically the Saints)
Now that Peyton Manning has retired after winning his fifth Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints, it's easy to forget that the Saints nearly didn't have the #1 draft pick. If the Saints had won a few close games, they would have fallen out of the running to get Peyton (who happens to be the son of a previous Saints QB, Archie Manning).
So, WI the Saints fall out of the running for the #1 pick in the 1998 NFL Draft? The team that was in second was the Indianapolis Colts, and they decided to go with Andre Wadsworth. I can see them picking Peyton (reportedly, they never even considered Ryan Leaf because of his...issues). Of course, this probably butterflies away their drafting of Donovan McNabb...
How well would the Colts have done with Peyton? They did face the Saints in Super Bowl XL, and nearly won.
And, please, don't get a Cardinals fan angry by bringing up Ryan Leaf; yes, he was horrible. However, at least the Cardinals drafted Peyton's brother Eli, and they had a good NFC title matchup this year.
I certainly still see Peyton helping out after Hurricane Katrina (remember the Manning for Governor petition, anyone)...
