So, tonight we've had the final episode of the BBC and HBO's epic drama series Rome. After six series and 62 episodes of one of bizarrely high budget TV, the historical epic has come to an end.
Obviously it helped that the BBC were always really interested in the project - keeping it on BBC1 throughout, and when they couldn't find all the money needed went round all the European broadcasters (although the German dub is hilarous). Not that RAI were needed, they soon realized that HBO basically owned their balls, they could produce as as many episodes as they like as long as they like and no-one could watch it and they'd still have to pony up.
But, what would the TV world be like without it? I'm guessing we wouldn't have had Tobias Menzies as Bond or anything like that. Supposedly there were all sorts of ways it could have been screwed in the UK, such as when there were plans to air it on BBC2, and I think they wanted to chop it to ribbons because everyone they thought everyone knew the history.
Supposedly their next big money show is the adaptation of some books that I've not heard of by an American author called George Martin, who again, I haven't heard of. From what I hear they've got Channel 4 on board with that in the UK, and Lauren Drummond, who has been in some soap or something over here has been cast as something unspellable and unpronounceable (Danni Targery , whatever). To be honest, I don't see a fantasy thing like that flying, over here or in the states. What, they think people will actually tune in to something with dragons and shit?
