DBWI: WI President Martin L. King did NOT survive his assassination attempt?

On March 29, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee Martin Luther King Jr. was shot. As we know, he survived the attempt on his life and was later elected President in 1972. But WI President King had NOT survived? WI he had died that day in Memphis Tennessee? WI he never became President?

((NOTE: First attempt at a DBWI, so go easy on me.))

*hedges bet*

Well we would never would have had that rigged election. Everyone knows MLK fudged the numbers in his victory. Maybe the nation would be better off without all the strife and distrust that now prevails?

Not true! Florida, Ohio and Iowa all show signs of tampering. It is clear it was a push so we could appear more 'progressive' to the USSR. And again, without this deep divide that exists, wouldn't we be better off?

We all know about the Texas riots...

Show signs? Where? no evidence=no conspiracy. And of course we had the Texas riots, the whole South is a hotbed of White Supremist activities. You didn't expect them to take a black president lying down did you? The divide can be painful at times, but without MLK blacks would have no rights at all south of the M-D Line.

Well even if he did rig the election, which he did not, I think it was better for King to have won instead of Nixon.

Plenty of evidence. Exit polls clearly show MLK losing in all those states. But he 'miraculously' won the election. Please.
Painful is a nice to put it. You must live in one of the 'unpained' states. And this is ignoring his policy choices...He was soft on Communism, more proof the democrats were behind his election.

I got to say I'm a little insulted by that statement. I represent a large part of the population! And i"m from the North. Are you saying you don't like that MLK winning helped divide the nation?

Oy. The polls you speak of (which right-wingers love to use in this way) deal only with southern white voters. Not the black ones. The southern blacks put him in the majority in the states he won like that. And he was not "soft on Communism". Just because he didn't nuke Moscow whenever the Conservatives started nagging doesn't mean he was soft on communsim.

So we are just ignoring the extreme unrest his election caused? Not only in the South. If I recall their was even some bloodshed in CA and Michigan...

You fail to note that unrest and bloodshed was spilled by members of the National Renaissance Party and other fascist or racist organizations.

well, here in Soviet Union we have great opinion of president King, he never got soft in his foregin policy, but he was illuminate enough to understand that a nation have to go where it's electors voted, and to divert all that money US used to burn in usless military struggle to give the americans a social state caring your masses, yor gnp grow of what? 20% during his mandate?
And do not forget the extirpation of illitteracy, the progresses in national healt, the full realization of the equallity in front of law of sexual minorities.... It was well whorth the death of some thousands fascists and religious nuttjobs in most bakward parts of your country!

Instead of him, who would have get the Democratic Nomination in 1972? Muskie? Maybe Chisholm, if the will for an African American candidate had persisted? Scoop Jackson, who takes his OTL running mate's place? Or Ted Kennedy, whose 1969 car "accident" is butterflied away? Or even, who knows, Wallace?

One thing is clear: without King, Nixon would've won the election, and continue the war in Vietnam during his whole second term, extending it to Pol Pot's Cambodia. Succeeded by Connally in 1976, who continues further the war. And America loses all its wealth in Southeast Asia.

Maybe Carter?
