DBWI: WI Michael Douglas hadn't killed Laura Welch?

Look, I don't want any debates on whether Governor Douglas would have made a better president than Al Gore. That brings us into *much* too recent political developments--I don't want a flamewar on Gore's Iraq policy. All I want to know is whether Douglas might in fact have defeated Gore in 2000 had the internet rumor mills not made so much of the accident in Midland in 1963 when Douglas's car collided with that driven by his ex-girlfriend Laura Welch, instantly killing her. Time and time again, investigators have concluded it was simply a tragic accident and that Douglas was in no way to blame. But that doesn't mean that the rumors didn't have some effect--and considering the narrow margin by which Douglas lost Florida to Gore in 2000, they may indeed have been decisive.

I know that some people argue that it was precisely the accident which made Douglas a more serious student, and paved the way for his successful career as a lawyer, Congressman, and ultimately Governor of Texas. I disagree. Douglas would have been sucessful with or without the accident. He was described (before the tragedy) as "an active athlete, physically attractive, and intelligent. He was nominated as the school's most popular male student while a junior, an honor typically awarded only to graduating high school seniors." http://www.thefullwiki.org/Michael_Dutton_Douglas

Of course another question is: What if it had been Douglas who had been killed in the accident? Who would be the most likely Republican presidential nominee in 2000 in that event?

All things considered, the evidence points to Pat Robertson or Senator John McCain (R-AZ). Both were leading members of their respective factions within the GOP. There was also California former governor Pete Wilson (D-CA), who was the last 2-term Republican governor of the state. Before he passed away, there was some minor talk of former JCS Chief Norman Schwarzkopf...

OOC: Wow, this is absolutely... brilliant. The best of DBWI, really. Although I initially believed you were talking about actor Michael Douglas

OOC: ok, you mean this ? I learned something, thank you.

back to the thread: how about Jeb Bush, governor of Florida and the son of former president George H. Bush ? Although the Bush family name has been tarnished by the multiple scandals the younger George has been involved in... that failed, alcoholic actor seriously harmed his family reputation... [OOC: I borrowed the Bush actor idea from Drew Gumboverse]

The son of a forgettable one-term president? That seems highly improbable. That's just as silly as the Reagan children entering into GOP politics,...

I mean, he could have done better then Gore in the Middle East. I mean, Gore did not what to even Invade Iraq in the first place, seeing Afghanistan as the main place to attack, but was force to by the people whating payback for the attacks.

Well the Gore administration gets a bad rap, but consider that he was dealing with North Korea's nuclear ambitions at the time as well as the flood of refugees throughout 2003. You have a sitting president dealing with war on two fronts and tied by an opposition-held Congress under Dennis Hastert. To make matters worse you had one of our allies, the Pakistani military, actively backing Osama bin Laden, even housing him a few blocks from their main headquarters...

Not a DBWI. Not sure what it is.

Let's just close it and walk away.
