[DBWI] WI: Malcolm X assassinated in 1965?

In honour of Malcolm X, who recently passed away at the age of eighty-eight, I thought I'd post a little WI:

Malcolm faced a number of assassination attempts from the Nation of Islam (some have crudely compared him to Hitler, in regard to his ability to survive assassination attempts). What if the most well-known attempt, the one on 21 February, 1965 in Harlem, had succeeded? IOTL, the initial shotgun blast grazed Malcolm's shoulder, and the assassins from the NOI's Newark mosque were subdued, so it'd be very easy to have the shotgun blast hit him in the chest and kill him, or something.

Thoughts?

His name's Malik Shabazz. Only critics and racists (not saying you're one!) still call him "Malcolm X".

Oh, oops. My brain is a little derped today -- I should have known that, especially since I just finished reading Barack Obama's biography of him.

For starters, there would be a lot less American Muslims. Maybe the United States would end up doggedly pro-Israel, like France did.

I think he'd end up as a much more controversial and radical figure. Assassinating him so soon after his NOI days would mean that those days would form the predominant part of his public image and legacy. He'd be remembered as a radical who preached black supremacy. No way he'd end up as one of the elder statesmen of the Civil Rights movement like King. I mean, he's got a moderate image now because of all the stuff he's done since the 60s, but people keep forgetting about how radical he started out as.
