I voted for A. Lincoln.

With many regrets, I do not see what peace there can be to keep after the Southern offensive in Bleeding Kansas and especially Dred Scott. I value peace and union above all, but it takes all sides to a quarrel to keep the peace, and the Southerners have given those trying to keep the peace two barrels in the chest.

I have visited the Deep South. I have family there. Not only is slavery a sad thing to see, but the South is a sadly poor place. For all their brave talk about slavery bringing the best living, it's short on shelter, roads, knowledge, and money. Nor is it even free for white men - I told my relations the North was better off, and half would not listen and even warned me I could be beaten if I said that in the town.

I do not understand Southern logic. They tell us that they are afraid for the consequences if they stay and are outnumbered by the North. And, yet, we now outnumber them, and yet, they are eager to go to war against a more populous people???????????? At least, with that command of logic, they should be beaten swiftly, indeed.

Mr. Lincoln. The man is the true embodiment of the American spirit, the common man of common origins rising to defeat tyranny. Mr. Lincoln has repeatedly promised to not fire a shot unless fired upon first, and also to not interfere with slavery in the states that already possess it.
