DBWI: Whitney Houston not murdered 18 years ago by Bobby Brown

On February 23, 1994, at the height of her successful singing career, Whitney Houston was found dead In her Atlanta home. A week later, investigators concluded that she was murdered by her husband Bobby Brown. Almost everybody knew where they were when they learned the horrible news of Whitney's death.

Of course, there was the live television coverage of Bobby Brown leading police on a car chase that spanned through five counties in Georgia and which ended 3 hours later when Brown's car exploded on the I-75.

Had Whitney not been murdered, would she have been able to maintain her success in music? How would she be remembered if she was still living today?

I think her career takes a simelar turn to other 80's pop musicians-in other words, moderate success from the 90's onwards, thanks mainly to a loyal fanbase.

I wonder what affect this has on Domestic Violence laws, particularly in the US? Whitney's death bought that issue to the forfront if I remember writely and new legislation was passed, at least partly in response to the public outcry following the murder.

I wonder what Bobby Brown does next? It's worth remembering he had a vibrent career in his own write during the 80's.

I don't know, if Whitney Houston isn't murdered, maybe OJ Simpson flies off the rails and murders Nicole?

Hmmm being from the UK I'd never heard of OJ Simpson until you mentioned him-I had to look him up. He seems prone to violence, but would this really lead to him Murdering his wife?

My suspician is that if he was likely to murder Nicole, he'd do it regardless of what Bobby Brown does (or doesn't do ITTL).

<Sigh> Who knows? This is just something that always comes up here in the U.S. when we talk about Brown/Houston. About a month after the media began to crack down on domestic violence afterwards, Simpson appeared on 20/20 (a national "news" show here) and right out of the blue began to tearfully apologize for how he'd been treating his wife, and promising to make ammends. So, it's been a sort of inside... I don't know if you'd call it a joke... ever since to talk about Simpson whenever someone brings up Houston/Brown.

This despite the fact that Simpson was only really the first celebrity to speak up this way. There were others, some of them even more famous than him, but no one ever brings them up. Frankly, I find it kind of tiresome.

Ruined his acting career for a decade, though, and halted the Naked Gun series at number 3.

Back to the OP, though: I really think Houston's career as a Pop Singer had pretty much reached its peak there. But, she was starting to get into less poppy stuff with "I Will Always Love You", she probably would have had a strong career in adult contemporary. I always thought she would have done a better job than Celine Dion on that song from Titanic.
