DBWI: What would have happened if Reagan hadn't died on Sept. 19, 1985?

As you know, on September 19, 1985, Ronald Reagan the 40th President of the United States met very early with Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid at the National Palace. Where they discussed the situation in the country at the time.

The reason the meeting will begin at 7:00 a.m. (Mexico City time) was because Reagan had to travel to Europe about 5 hours later.

At 7:00 a.m., Reagan arrived at the National Palace and immediately headed to the Presidential Office where he would begin to discuss the affairs of both countries.

At 7:19 a.m., a strong earthquake began to be felt in the south of the country, which affected the capital. Several government buildings collapsed, including the National Palace, and the area where both presidents were located collapsed.

Ronald Reagan (1911-1985) and Miguel de la Madrid (1934-1985) died instantly, leaving great confusion in the chaos of the country.

In the United States, after hearing the news and confirming the President's death, Vice President and successor George HW Bush became the 41st President of the United States and had to deal with a dismayed country.

In Mexico, the succession was more confusing, who is the president now? the people wondered, there was conflicting information. A few hours later, it was reported that Manuel Bartlett, secretary of the Interior since 1982, was the 59th president of Mexico.

Bartlett, dismayed by the earthquake and the death of then-President Madrid, took steps to rescue survivors, maintain order in the country and investigate why the National Palace collapsed if it had resisted previous earthquakes.

A shocked United States began to make preparations to help the Mexican people after the earthquake, George HW. Bush sympathized with the Mexican people and sent help but was also interested in the reasons why the National Palace had not resisted the earthquake.

These were the presidents of both countries until today.

OTL has been a serious Ameriscrew over the last 30 years. Maybe if we had people other than Bush and McCain we wouldn't have been involved in multiple wars almost the entire time. Moonbeam was a disaster unless you were a Wall Street fat cat.

Interesting footnote: In the movie "Back to the Future", there was originally a scene where Doc asked Marty who was President in 1985 and laughed when he heard it was Reagan. Production was complete when the tragedy struck so they just cut a few seconds out of the movie.

OOC: Bush senior was the smart one......

It could be worse though you could have President Trump. After all, Labour did elect Alan Sugar as their current leader.

OOC: Bush senior was the smart one......

I read a timeline once where he started a war and tanked the economy. He lost his reelection bid, and his son eventually became President, started a war, and tanked the economy even worse. Can't remember where I saw it - wasn't on here.

The reality TV/WWF guy? That sounds a little ASB.

It might sound ASB, but I remember reading somewhere that then-candidate Jerry Brown did consider Trump as his running mate. The two weren't that far apart on most social and economic issues, after all. Plus Trump's been a major operative for the Democratic Party in recent days, and I've heard rumblings about him considering a run in 2020 against Romney. He's a little out there sometimes, but truthfully, I think he'd do a good job. Maybe he could help stabilize relations with Mexico after the mess that's been the Romney Administration.

For an old white guy, Donald Trump has been incredibly woke on cultural and racial issues which is shocking given how racist he used to be; he helped fund the Protect Black Lives protests in 2015 over the death of Tamir Rice, he provided pro bono legal assistance for DACA recipients when Romney tried to get them deported, and he's openly said it's time for a black president. With that said, I don't think he'll run; he's pretty old and lives an unhealthy lifestyle, i heard he downs 2-3 Big Macs a day. But he will most likely throw his weight behind his good friend Cory Booker (it's very likely that either Booker or Illinois Senator Barack Obama will be the first black president of the United States)

Booker would do a good job. He turned Newark around as mayor.

Obama seems like he avoids doing anything of substance. We need bolder leadership than that.

Obama's been one of the most productive senators, the problem is that the media solely focuses on his great speeches and his flair for the dramatic (his 24 hour filibuster against Romney's "Defense of Marriage" act that would have invalidated gay marriages was absolutely epic, though it was made moot by the court case later that year that stated that seperate designations for gay/straight couples violated the equal protection clause). The Obama-Clinton Net Neutrality Bill was a masterful piece of legislation as well.
