DBWI: What will the 1960's be like?

The war has just ended, and while much of Europe, Asia, Africa, and even parts of North America are rebuilding, one has to wonder what the future holds to us? What will the world be like in 30 years in 1960? Will food be in pill form? Shall war be a thing of the past, or so horrid nothing is lef tof humanity? Will this Alternate History Publication still be out? :D

Well, rebuilding looks like it is going to take a while, so skilled craftsman (the 'Trades') will be in demand for some time, as will all types of engineers. That'll have impacts throughout society, the push for more emphasis on 'hard' sciences started during The War, but despite what folks in Academe are telling themselves, I think it's only going to accelerate. More hard science folks - more inventions?

I think it's hard to argue that we're going to see more integration across the old national borders of some type - resources are just too scarce, and we've lost the better part of two generations worth of young (and not so young) men to war and shell-shock.

Population is going to crash for a while, or we're going to see some pretty big changes to the old familial order - wonder how the churches will handle that.

Speaking of changes, the folks that got us into this mess are going to be very unpopular for a while - quick victorious wars are popular, long messy wars are not. At all. Sucks to be a royal family or a senior politician right now I wager.

Guess we'll all be learning some Spanish or Portuguese - seems like South America escaped most the havoc - smart buggers stayed neutral, like we should've. Think I'm going to head down there to Argentina or Uruguay - they're doing as well or better than we were before the war...

Hm, then again, I could try to catch one of the steamers down to the Antipodes - I hear that opportunities are wide open down there, and the Aussies and Kiwis always struck me as good people.

Not sure if this mag will still be up and running in 30 years, folks are going to be too focused on getting back on their feet to spend time writing about 'what might've beens'. Probably just be a few bitter old timers, writing screeds about how if So-And-So had just done This or That then the Good Guys (depends on the writer, 'course) would've won in a trifle - back by Christmas and all that nonsense that they were spouting before it all went pear-shaped.

I'm still wary of those Italian antipodal bombers. Even after this ceasefire, I'm skeptical on their claims that they'll stick to it and launch no more antipodean raids against us.

The free market has failed completely, the depression showed that. Maybe it won´t be communism everywhere but from now on the economy will be government regulated and all important parts of it will end up being nationalized, healthcare, banking system, oil and mining reserves, agriculture and of course most art will be state sponsored.

The future will be heavily regulated and it will be a good things, we must never let things run out of control like they did back then.
