DBWI: What if the West allowed Russia to fall into dictatorship again?

So, lately, I've been thinking, as it's about twenty years since the fall of the Soviet Union. Francis Fukuyama put it with hyperbole, of course, but he was right that it was an 'end of history' in one sense - things are looking good in Russia at the moment, with all those resources and consumer goods they weren't able to utilise as the USSR making it such a prosperous country.

But what would have happened, say, if NATO and the rest of the world hadn't paid attention to Russia's situation and helped in its transition to democracy, and they let it become another de facto one-party state?

Certainly, I think we'd see all the country's wealth being put into the hands of an elite few, rather than distributed justly to improve everyone's standard of living. But would it be the capitalists in charge buying the elections, or the old Soviet holdouts from the KGB rigging the elections?
