DBWI: What if the Lovecraft Mythos didn't become mainstream

I know its hard to imagine and would probably require some pretty substantial pop culture butterfly's but I'm wondering what would happen if the Lovecraft Mythos never went mainstream. What other effects would this have on other forms of pop culture.

Kill Lovecraft earlier? Given his various health problems, he easily could've died in the 30's or 40's, rather than 1956.

You wouldn't have had all those Church of Dagon loonies drowning themselves back in 1999.

OTOH Dreamlands Online wouldn't be a thing. There'd be some other VR MMORPG, but probably not interacting with your REM sleep, so definitely not as immersive and cool (since awake people wouldn't have much time to play)

And those horrible John Carpenter movies would never have happened.

P.s. I'm raising funds to build a time machine purely because of those stupid abominations. Cthulhu Vs Godzilla. Seriously, who actually woke up one morning and thought "wow, that's a really good idea..." and how much of their brain had been removed beforehand?

"Sushi! It's what's for breakfast!"

"Y'know, for a Great Old One, he doesn't look that great."

"♬ Cthulhu-lulu-lu, where are you?
We've got Earth to destroy now"

Well..okay fine THAT was okay but its their commentary that made it watchable. I think the more recent Hollywood adaptations of Lovecraft's work have done rather well, I LOVED Guillermo del toro's At the Mountains of Madness. it was a VERY bleak film and it did a superb take on building the tension up and up, using light, sound and a bit of music to let you scare the bejasus out of yourself whilst the bleak surroundings and terrain (filmed in Greenland and Iceland IIRC) just added to the weight of the whole movie and of course the big reveal with the Shoggoth...superb, absolutely superb.

The older stuff with Vincent Price and the like were..okay but they have aged poorly despite them being (rightfully) lauded as classics.
