DBWI: What if the French uprising of 1789 succeeded ?

Sorry in advance for the obscure point of divergence but this one fascinates me somehow. What if the uprising did succeed? Would France have ended up like England after the execution of Charles the First?

I really can't see it succeeding unless you found some way to undo the Enlightenment reforms of Louis XVI, where he freed all serfs and cut down on the dominance of the nobility. As such, no one was really willing to risk their lives for something that didn't promise them meaningful improvement, so the revolt was crushed. You'd need a fundamentally different Louis XVI in DNA, I think.

Maybe you could have a monarch who was more of an autocrat and less willing to listen to the complaints of the (nascent) bourgeoisie and allow a limited amount of constitutional rule?
