Frankly it's hard to see otherwise; I'm afraid that the historical realities show that British troops were simply incapable of fighting on foreign soil without the support of European allies or an extravagant overexpenditure. Witness the Sokoto, the Crimea, the Americans and the Boers - hardly a record of victory, after all...
