What it says in the thread, folks - I mean, it was close. Do you think the 1980s would have been that dramatically changed, or would Britain still bounce back? Could this have led to a U.S. "Superpower?"
OCC:
It seems to me that you misunderstand what a DBWI is. A DBWI is where you take an event from our time line (this real world), twist it so as to give it an alternate outcome (create a new reality), then write a WI with OTL as the alternate timeline (alternate reality). Examples ...
DBWI: What if President Nixon had conspired to cover up the break-in at DNC headquarters?
In OTL Nixon, a few days after the Watergate Break-in entered into a conspiracy to cover it up. In the new reality created he fired Erlichmann & Dean. Given this new reality, the question becomes, what if, instead of this, he attempted to cover the mess up.
DBWI: What if President Kennedy had been shot and died in Dallas on 11-22-1963?
In OTL JFK was shot and killed in Dallas on 11-22-1963. In the new reality created, a child ran into the street at the moment Oswald pulled the trigger. Kennedy fell forward and then down on to the carseat when the car slammed on the brakes. Aside from a few minor bruises, Kennedy was unhurt; the bullets miss him. Given this new reality, the question becomes, what if Oswald's bullets hit their target and kill JFK.
With that said, while your Alternate World WI is not a DBWI, it's a fine question, though you do need to tell more about the alternate "real world" that you're writing a WI about if you want more then a bunch of disjointed, conflicting, mismatched and contradicting responses.
