The Soviets crossed the Oder only once and got enveloped when their attack on Berlin failed. The Germans spent the rest of the war destroying army after army (Breslau, Stettin Vienna) until the Grand Coalition chased the reds all the way back to Russia, which was also spearheaded by German Divisions. More Germans died to keep Europe free than most of the rest of the Grand Coalition combined, and only Poland paid a heavier price per capita for victory in Europe.
I think they held up pretty well against the Reds.
I never said the Germans never fought well. In fact they did amazing DESPITE government turmoil, communist sympathizers, and an attempted Nazi coup. The army declared martial law over the country and dictated all war decisions without political opinion or input.
I shudder to think what would happen to men like Kliest, Bock, or Rommel if some insane politician told them how to fight.
