One of the interesting items that isn't discussed much is how Sadat's actions directly influenced U.S. policies. Consider how Reagan and his weapons shipments to Iran and Afghanistan were exposed by the purge against the Muslim Brotherhood in 1983. The fact that this took place as Reagan bragged about "never negotiating with terrorists" served only to build the case for impeachment ahead of the 1984 presidential elections...

The Contras were also revealed to have been supported by Reagan himself just weeks before his impeachment. If anything that just further destroyed Reagan's image, and George H. W. Bush essentially became a lame duck during his brief tenure, apologizing for the actions his predecessor did whenever he had the chance. Ironic for a former leader of the CIA.
