DBWI: What if Reagan elected president in 1980?

I'm tired of the cliche that Reagan would have started World War III. It's bad enough that we have that false cliche with MacArthur or Goldwater, but
Reagan would have been a hero that would have won the Cold War.

Now thanks to the "nuclear freeze" that Soviets possess nuclear blackmail, something which will bite us in the butt someday.

Wait, you think that if the US had somehow driven the USSR into the ground economically it would have given up its nuclear weapons? No, nuclear blackmail would continue to exist by whatever hypothetical government that would have succeeded it. Bankruptcy doesn't mean whoever's in the Kremlin can't push the big red button.

Yeah, that's an extremely... wide and biased definition of the word "Communism".

Well, Reagan sure followed that definition. I think he appeared in one ad asking Americans to oppose sanctions with Apartheid South Africa.

I wonder with that attitude, how he would have dealt with South Africa.

I know it was quickly downplayed after The Gipper passed away, but I clearly remember GHW Bush calling Reagan out for "Voodoo Economics."

Could anyone explain what he meant by that?

Would Voodoo Economics have maybe averted the incredibly embarrassing national debt of several dozen billion dollars that we're stuck with?! Supersonic planes and bases on the moon are nice and all, but our descendants will definitely NOT enjoy the bill they'll be getting.

Please explain how somebody "wins" the Cold War.
