As we all know due to an invigorated sense of piety combined with nationalism in the mid-1800s in Italy the papal states led by the pope eventually created an Italian confederation with himself at the head. However the short-lived prime minister of piedmont-sardinia Camillo Benso wanted the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia to be the ones to unite the peninsula and Garibaldi (who was killed after attempting an uprising against the pope for a secular Italian Republic) was said to have considered working with them. However, the kingdom would pull back from its ambitions and the people would eventually rise up in favor of the pope. What if instead piedmont sardinia followed through and successfully united italy? How would this change the fabric of europe today?

Roman Catholicism would have likely developed very differently if the Pope was a “prisoner” in a Rome run by a Secular Italy instead of the leader of a Europeans Great Power.
OOC: You should ask a mod to move this to the pre-1900 section.
