DBWI: What If Lincoln Was Assassinated?

I heard on the History Channel that there was an assassination plot against Lincoln. What might have happened if he was assassinated? Of course, Andrew Johnson would have handled reconstruction. African Americans might have remained second-class citizens.

Well, Lincoln wasn't exactly the most non-racist politician out there. But yeah, Johnson was worse, and probably would've bungled Reconstruction as well. Black rights could've been set back decades.

EDIT: (OOC: Just realised - wrong forum. This should be in Before 1900.)

War with the british empire might have been avoided, emergence of the Lincoln Doctrine, politics of continual industrialisation/modenisation and glorious expansion would certainly never have happened.

While living standards might have been higher and reconstruction easier, the USA might have pretty much retained its post-war size instead of eventually including both american continents and gaining footholds in asia, antartica & africa.

Population today would have stayed well below the billion. With such a much smaller territory and no major ennemies, state and army wouldn´t have sucessfully abolished the popular electoral process and gained the monolithic control over US society they have today, a rather primitive society I would add.

While irrational opposition groups have argu... pretended that this glorious path toward the future is overshadowed by the current tensions with the United Empires, the global thermonuclear war they have been predicting for years have not occured.
If it have been avoided in 78´& ´92, during the first cold war, why would it occure today?

How much did he control the day to day operations during the war? (OOC: Intentional misunderstanding. Killing him during the war makes sence.)
