While the eventful Presidency of George McClellan sometimes makes it seem that his rise to the White House was inevitable, the 1864 presidential election was pretty close. McClellan won the Electoral College by 137 votes to Lincoln's 96, but the popular vote was only 52% to 48%.

Suppose that Sherman had somehow been able to take Atlanta, or that Sheridan had been able to win some decisive victories in the Shenandoah Valley. Or perhaps the draft riots that broke out in New York and Chicago might not have been so bad. That might be enough to tip the scales in favor of the Republicans.

What do you think the consequences of a Lincoln re-election might have been?
