On September 27th, 1198, at the Battle of Gisors, King Philip II of France drowned when, while trying to escape, the bridge collapsed under the weight of the retreating French forces. Supposedly, some of his soldiers tried to save him. Obviously, they failed, but what if they had succeeded in saving him?
Personally, I think that if he had survived, he would have been just in the right place to take advantage of the death of Richard the Lionheart at Chalus the very next year, and the subsequent Second Anarchy, for he would still have had the OTL King Arthur at his court. Who knows, he may have achieved his goal of breaking the power of the Angevin dynasty within his lifetime.
Any thoughts?
