DBWI: What if Japan wasn't partitioned at the end of WW2

What if Japan wasn't partitioned between the Soviet Union and the United States at the end of WW2?
What would Japan be like today?

It would surely be much worse off. South Japan wouldn't have received the massive American investments it did as a bulwark against communism, which made it a high tech and industry center to this day. North Japan would be slightly better off without the planned economy (until the 1970s Soviet reforms), but they might still worship their god emperor leading to a highly militarized society, resultant stagnation, and perhaps WW3.

Japan had to be split between the two powers of the day to prevent a third world war.

All of Japan was pretty fucked up after the invasion. It took two decades for South Japan to claw its way back to prosperity.

The partition was the only way. After that bloody mess in China, where Mao won anyway and took all of Korea with him, America didn't want to go through that again. Thankfully Stalin had a moment of clarity and agreed to the partition, and the Sendai government focused on militarization and dedication to the national cause. Given how group-centered Japan is already, it worked really well, and North Japan actually ended up a lot closer to the rest of Asia even after the Communist government fell.

South Japan is still kind of an oddity. And even as well-off as it seems under the Diet, anyone with working eyes knows the place to be in South Japan is Yokohama Military Base. Yes, it only got built up to piss off North Japan and provide border security, but the Tokyo Zone isn't some demilitarized nightmare anymore after the land mine removal. It really is a beautiful park area now and a symbol of conciliation between the Kyoto and Sendai governments, not at all like the DMZ in Vietnam full of death traps and snipers on both sides. And both sides ended up being hellholes.

I wonder how different Europe would be. I don't think the Marshall Plan would have happened or been so successful. Picture Germany partitioned - wouldn't be pretty, like East and West Poland or the Czech Republic and poor, shitty Slovakia.

At least we managed to save Jeju.

Kind of a mini rump state at this point.

That was not mao but his puppet kim but still on point.

Wonder what would be of Formosa in this scenario.

Well of course it was Kim calling the shots but Mao still gets most of the credit.

Formosa...lemme Yahoo that...ah yes, the old name of Camp 101, the worst prison camp in the world. Check out the book "Hell Island" for all the gory details - and whatever you do, don't eat a full meal beforehand.

OOC: Damn things got that badly for Taiwan ITTL?

The situation might be a North and South Korea But Japan. Korea wold be under Full under Soviet control as Japan would be split somewhere in the middle. Japan Occupied Islands would be under Allies Occupation. Japanese occupied China would be given back Either to The Republic of China or Communist China.

OOC: We've already established that Mao won, retook Manchuria, and Taiwan, as well as Korea, somehow. I suspect Soviet backup.

Camp 101's a horrific place, but that being said, there are significant rallies and protests throughout China to have them closed down. Then again, given how the PRC has dealt with protesters in the past... Hopefully the Politiburo sees reason.

Hopefully but this is a country that actively tried to steer the Korean reform toward authoritarianism, though the people had had about enough of the Kim family and didn't trust the Chinese. So a country that previously said South Japan was its biggest enemy - even worse than America - is now its best friend. And sooner or later the Chinese people will get sick of the CCP the same way. The foundations of a Slovakia-style overthrow are being planted.

At least the CCP no longer practices "three generations of punishment."
