DBWI: What if Hitler doesn't die 2/23/39

In OTL Hitler's driver had a sudden seizure and crashed the car into a nearby grocery store killing both Hitler and the driver. Do you think he would have done better the Cohering did and not have been caught napping in 1942 when the USSR invaded Poland?

OOC: I think if Hitler died before the invasion of Poland he would have gone down in history as a great German nationalist. WWII probably wouldn't happened and if it did it would be blamed on his successor. Although Anti-Semitism was already bad it wasn't completely murderous yet and could be compared with various times in Russia during its pogroms. So if he would have been "lucky" enough to die in 1939 he would have gone down in history as a controversial German Nationalist leader instead of an insane, murderous thug.

It is very likely that if Hitler did not die that he would of succeeded in gaining the Polish Corridor from Poland. Its unlikely that the Chamberlain government in London would of stopped their policy of appeasement (look at what happened with the Baltic States and the Leningrad Conference in 1941) This would of made Germany more than ready to face the Red onslaught and perhaps could of delayed the war indefinitely.

It would all depend on how Hitler handled the situation in Czecho-Slovakia. After Munich, Czech-Slovak relations were worse than ever. This, of course, led to the Slovak Insurrection, and Goering's attempted land grab, and when Horthytried to get involved, things just went downhill. It isn't well known now, but Tiso actually wanted German help for Slovakia, which Goering didn't provide. If Hitler had provided help, Slovakia would have become independent, and Bohemia would have probably been made a puppet state.

Hitler would probably have been able to controll that mad man Himmler, in a way that Göring never could. Letting Himmler put up his Death Camps was a sign of weakness for Göring, showing how little controll he had over the madmen of the party. Of course it was too late when Göring resigned in support of Göbbels in 1942, the war was as good as lost. Göring even missed the chance of securing Mussolini as an ally, much because he hoped a German friendly Yugoslavia could keep the status quo in the Balkans. In the end Göring fought with no allies. Germany was doomed to lose from the start.

Goering's attempt to conquer Bohemia didn't help matters. When the Wehrmacht went in they wound up destroying those priceless Skoda tanks, which would have been a big help against the Red Army.

If Hitler hadn't died he might have been able to hold off the Soviet Union. I seem to remember Hitler being quite popular in Britain, perhaps they would have come to Germany's aid?

Indeed, the Soviet creation of puppets all over Eastern Europe could have been averted. The partionign of Europe in 3 zones; the Eastern communist zone, the Western democratic zone and the southern Fascist Zone could have been averted. I mean the situation with Finland, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and the Baltic States falling to communism was all due to the German military screw ups. And certainly the situation in Germany would have been better, the new Republic of Germany that emerged in early 1944 under allied leadership never really got a stable government before 1974, and there were so many communist coup attempts that undermined the government. Certainly Germany would have been in a better state if Hitler had survived.

OOC: When? There were a few Facist groups in both the US and UK but they never had huge numbers.

OoC/ I never said fascism was popular in Britain, just Hitler. I'm basing this off Chamberlain's appeasement policy, the sense of sympathy towards Germany after the harsh Treaty of Versailles and Churchill's comment praising Hitler's strength.

Also, if you disagree, pretend I'm a bit of a noob in this ATL and that I'm just making it up. :D /OoC

The appeasement of Germany was more based on fear that another World War would break out and the first was bloody enough. The sympathy was for Germany not Hitler when it came to the treaty and Churchill was never a fan of Hitler and pressed the government to confront Hitler before the war broke out.
