DBWI: What if George W. Bush Won The 2000 Election?

We all know that Al Gore won the 2000 Election by an extremely small margin, losing the popular vote to George W. Bush and went on to be defeated by then-Governor Bush and Senator Elizabeth Dole in the 2004 rematch. What would America look like if Bush won in the 2000 election? Would the 9/11 attacks on the Capitol, the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon still happen?

Probably. The terrorists don't care if the President is a Democrat or Republican and they started plotting before they knew the nominees, much less the President.

The government ignored warnings, would they still do that if Bush became President, and would the House still be basically destroyed in the attacks? President Gore seemed to bog us down with quite a bit of inactivity.

Well....if Bush was President, the House will not be destroyed. President Gore ignored the warnings and did not take any significant action in response to the attacks.

Would the 9/11 attacks on the Capitol, the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon still happen?

Yes. Evidence from the detaining of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed revealed that Al Qaeda had planned years before the attack happened.

They would still happen, but I think that Bush, who had shown skepticism about "nation building" and had called for a "more humble" foreign policy in 2000, would have replied with greater restraint. In particular, I don't think he would have invaded Iraq.

In retrospect, of course, Gore's decision to invade Iraq was not surprising. He was a liberal hawk who had voted for the Gulf War in 1991, and many of his top advisers were also liberal hawks and outspoken advocates of "regime change" in Baghdad: https://www.alternatehistory.com/fo...ve-gone-to-war-with-iraq.306846/#post-8743722

Thinking about it further, we might not have had the invasion of Pakistan. The invasion of Pakistan was only possible because the post-Iraq Middle East was so stable thanks to Gore and Lieberman's planning and diplomacy. If Iraqi Freedom hadn't gone so well, all of the troops, money and attention would have been tied down there instead.

I think we may have seen less close elections..... President Bush just narrowly won again in 2008, and President Biden won with just 283 EVs and 49% of the PV in 2012. Maybe Senator McCain would have been elected in 2012. The 2010 Recession was a big turning point, maybe it would have occurred later if Bush became President. Honestly, I was hoping for Senator Obama to win the nomination in 2012, it was a tragedy what happened to him.

Well the progessive party's success led to all the other parties which now gotten and taken off , The Christian Democrats (fiscally left, socially right) the Judeo-Christian Values Party (religious righters who don't like republician squshiness on social issues), and other parties like the Libertarians who before 2000 had not much success have grown massivly. they dont run in presidential elections, yet, but look act as wild cards in the house and senate with both the CDs and Libertarians flipping caucus from time to time, bringing the control of the chamber with them. This has led to more compromises so far and more repesentaion for their praticular political brand. Do you think this would of happened under a Bush administration? I think so, too many people without good repsentaion for their views in the old system. For a Annectodal example I look at my parents, they hated voting before the third parties rised, They we're Catholic who were deeply pro life and socially conservative while at the same time loving fisical leftism and committed to pro immigrant policies, they voted for Bush in 2000 because of there pro life stance but they hated it, and I mean hated it,I really can't see them voting for the old time Republicians every four years. They are solid dem voters now at least in primaries because the party has to hear their voice or lose a Majority in the house and senate. That's good. You have any stories like that?

yeah i sympthazie,Even though I would of voted for Bob Casey if i was old enough to participate in the Primaries back then. I mean he wasn't even shot like Robert Kennedy, Just was unlucky enough to be on an Amtrak train which happend to have an accident. At least it brought much better security on trains and other transport.

I have always been a libertarian Republican, although at times I do vote for Libertarian candidates who make a good argument. Senator Obama and President Biden are really the exceptions to this, they both have (or had) charisma and leadership ability in droves.

I'm Christian Democratic through and through, I liked Obama but he wasn't Pro life like Casey was, so I wouldn't of voted for the man no matter how much I liked him on other issues

I don’t know if Mitt Romney would still have been elected Governor of Utah, and would have become the Senator from Utah afterwards. He seemed like he would have run in Massachusetts in 2002, but I guess the Democratic wave showed otherwise.

So Guys what do you think Colbert would of done if Bush became President? Now adays he is the Christian Democratic leader in the house but before that he was a television comedian. Do you think he would just of stayed in Tv or do you think he would of still gone into politics

Isn't that guy the Son of George Romney, it was interesting when he defected to the CDs,kind of singaled the shift in how mormons voted from almost always republician to a competive demographic.
