DBWI: What if Dick Clark hadn't died in 1962?

Those of us of a certain age, or who are students of television history, might remember the show American Bandstand. It had been hosted by Dick Clark, who died in 1962, and showcased music stars of the day and teenagers dancing to the music of the day. Clark's show helped several artists to hit in big, until his tragic death in an automobile accident in 1962 in Philadelphia.

My question is, if Dick Clark had lived, how much infuence do you think he, or the show American Bandstand (they tried another host but the chemistry was not there and the show was canceled in 1963) would have had on American popular music, on rock and roll in particular, and on American culture and television?

Re:

Could Clark done something that people like Casey Kasem eidn't do on the radio countdown? I can't see the program going on until maybe 1970 but that is optimistic.

I heard someone speculating the other day the show could have remained relevant, and Clark himself relevant, for many more years...I mean, who wants to see an older man cavorting around with teenagers? No one would have watched it for much longer than say 1970 or so.

Agreed, 1970 or so is the absolute limit. After that his audience would consider him too old to have much relevance .
