One would have thought that impeaching a president in wartime was unthinkable. Clinton's impeachment in December 1998 fell in the middle of the Kosovo War. Everyone remembers the backlash against the call to impeach George W. Bush in late 2003 for obstruction of justice relating to the WMD claims. But somehow, what was unthinkable in 2003 was all but routine in 1998.
This WI can't be complete without mentioning how Al Gore, running for re-election in 2000, lost after an extensive series of recounts and legal battles found that Gore lost to Bush by only twenty-three votes in Florida.
OOC: The 2000 election can't possibly have been as close if Gore had been the incumbent. We would have seen him as president from 1999 to the election, and he would have won or lost by a comfortable margin in Florida and in the other swing states...
